WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 /Christian Newswire/ -- The White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives will convene a Compassion in Action Roundtable with a discussion entitled "Faith-Based and Community Solutions to Combat HIV/AIDS" on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The event will feature Jay Hein, Director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives; Ambassador Karen Hughes, Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs; Ambassador Mark Dybul, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator; Ambassador James Kimonyo, Rwandan Ambassador to the United States of America; Rick Warren, Pastor of Saddleback Church and Kay Warren, Executive Director of the HIV/AIDS Initiative at Saddleback Church; as well as non-governmental organizations and government officials working in the field of HIV/AIDS care and prevention.
The Roundtable will focus on domestic and international HIV/AIDS and the expanse of prevention, treatment and care efforts being advanced through innovative partnerships with both faith-based and community nonprofits. The HIV/AIDS pandemic stands among the worst tragedies the world has seen. On World AIDS Day, we remembered the more than 20 million people who have died from AIDS. According to the most recent estimates by the United Nations, more than 33 million people live with HIV worldwide, with more than one million here in the United States. Each day, approximately 5,700 lose their lives to AIDS around the world.
