ENUMCLAW, Wash., Nov. 20 /Christian Newswire/ -- When Chuck Colson accepted Christ while serving time in prison for his part in the Watergate scandal the changes in his life acted as a springboard for a major ministry known as Prison Fellowship Ministries. His teaching tools, books, and outreach opportunities stand as a shining example that those behind bars are in no way out of reach of God's forgiveness. Countless men have received life-altering healing, forgiveness, and direction through Colson's work and shared their stories.

While volunteering in a jail outreach for women, Gail Thomas McKenna got to see, first hand, the changing power of Scripture in the lives of women serving time there. Hearing their stories of faith and how it changed them, both as they served their time and as they adjusted to freedom, McKenna felt compelled to record their stories. "When I told the women I was writing their stories, they got so excited," McKenna says. "It was contagious." She is optimistic that her book, "Seeking God While Serving Time" will offer a much more positive view of life in jail walls. "It will bring out the human qualities of those who are serving time," She points out. "I'm hoping that it will also be a sign of hope for the families of those who are incarcerated."

Why write the women's stories and not the men's. Besides the fact that all of her experience lies with female inmates, Gail McKenna says, "There are numerous books on testimonies and stories of incarcerated men, but I'm not aware of any book featuring the women."

Sister Helen Prejean, author of "Dead Man Walking" says of McKenna's book, "We must extend our love to people who are alone and have hit rock bottom. These stories are about the women Gail McKenna visits at the county jail each week. She gives them hope and shows how we can all live the gospel message today."

When she isn't writing and ministering, Gail enjoys traveling with her husband, Jerry, who is an accomplished sculptor. She also plays the harp and piano. One of her greatest enjoyments at this stage of her life is being with her eight grandchildren.
