ENUMCLAW, Wash., Aug. 16 /Christian Newswire/ -- Heads of government from Germany, France, Japan, Canada, Italy, the United Kingdom, Russia, and the United States recently reconvened for the annual Group of 8 summit meeting held this year in Heiligendamm, Germany. Although reaching agreement on a series of objectives, the future of Serbia's Kosovo province remained unresolved, reports the Associated Press.
Under U.N. supervision since 1999, the predominantly ethnic Albanian province continues to vie for independence, the possibility of which many European countries--including former Yugoslavia province of Serbia--find unacceptable.
In a recent press release, Serbian president, Boris Tadic stated, "Serbia will never give up Kosovo, nor its European future." The fact that the United States supports granting Kosovo statehood only solidifies tensions between the East and the West.
According to authors Jerry and Faith McCollough, those tensions aren't new; they also run far deeper than a mere land dispute.
"The broader issue is the conflict between Eastern and Western Christianity. The Balkans simply happen to be on the fault-line between these two ideologies. The pockets of Islamic influence in Bosnia were caught in the middle of the clash of these two; Serbia has Orthodox roots, and Croatia has Roman Catholic roots."
Having spent the last twenty years living and working in Belgium, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Germany, the McColloughs have a passion for European history.
