CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., May 7, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- Carey V. Brown, Chattanooga-based entrepreneur and philanthropist, was recently awarded an honorary doctorate degree by his alma mater, Tennessee Temple University (TTU). Brown is known locally for his entrepreneurial success and philanthropic work through the Christian nonprofit, Covenant Values Foundation (CVF).

Dr. Steven Echols, TTU President, presented the honorary degree during the school's spring commencement ceremony at Brainerd Baptist Church in Chattanooga on May 4, 2013.

In awarding the honorary doctorate, Dr. Echols said "Carey Brown exemplifies a humble and generous commitment to philanthropy for the glory of God. His worldwide outreach, supporting organizations and people who are in need of spiritual direction and rehabilitative support, is an inspiration to this institution."

In 1982, Brown graduated from Tennessee Temple University and has since become a successful entrepreneur within the Chattanooga business community, after incubating a dozen companies over the past 10 years.

Brown has also contributed to numerous nonprofit organizations and Christian ministries across the world. He and his wife, Linda Brown, have traveled to many countries, such as Costa Rica, Swaziland, and Romania for mission work.

In 2012, Brown cofounded Covenant Values Foundation and currently serves on the Board of Trustees. At its inception, CVF made a pledge to give away one billion dollars to support those most in need. In the first year of operation, Brown's work through Covenant Values Foundation made an enormous impact on five continents and across 53 countries, including:

• Supporting 10,000 orphans
   
• Founding 31,608 new churches
   
• Fostering 447,667 new believers -- people who came to Christ through CVF-supported ministries

Brown received an honorary doctorate, Doctor of Humane Letters, for his work within the Christian philanthropic community.

Past TTU honorary doctorate recipients include Kay Arthur, award-winning Christian author and cofounder of Precept Ministries International, and the late Reverend Jerry Falwell, Sr.
