COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Feb. 17 /Christian Newswire/ -- When God calls Christians to serve abroad in missions, He equips them for their calling. But who equips the parents of missionaries (POMs) for the loss of their loved one?

"When God invites a son or daughter into missions, He also invites the parents," write "Parents of Missionaries" authors Cheryl Savageau, EdD, and Diane Stortz. Maybe so, but many parents aren't ready emotionally to accept the invitation.

"Parents of missionaries often miss their children and grandchildren and experience a variety of emotions: fear, anger, pride, loneliness, and perhaps even bitterness toward God," CMF International Executive Director Doug Priest says. "[The] authors ... are uniquely qualified to address these important but often neglected topics, providing tangible steps toward acceptance and adjustment."

"Parents of Missionaries" (Authentic Publishing, paper, $16.99, ISBN: 9781934068397) is a comprehensive guidebook to understanding and coping with the challenges POMs face. Savageau, a clinical counselor, and Stortz, a five-year POM, address stages of grief, understanding life on the field, supporting a child's calling, communication, reconnecting at furlough times, and more. Approachable and sympathetic in tone, "Parents of Missionaries" encourages readers to accept their feelings of loss, doubts, and fears, and work through them to develop strong connections with their missionary sons and daughters.

Although the book is targeted to parents of missionaries, it will also prove invaluable for parents of deployed soldiers and others whose work requires them to live far from family.
