Christian Newswire/ -- This week, as the U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments regarding the constitutionality of California's Proposition 8 – a voter-backed initiative that defines marriage as between one man and one woman – Advocates for Faith & Freedom's Robert Tyler will be available for interviews and comments from California.
Mr. Tyler is an attorney who has been active in the legal defense of traditional marriage since California's Proposition 22 passed in 2000 and was subsequently challenged in the courts. Mr. Tyler and his associate attorney, Jennifer Bursch, were significantly involved in the litigation defending the Proposition 22 Legal Defense and Education Fund and the late Senator Pete Knight when Proposition 22 was unlawfully ignored by Mayor Gavin Newsom in 2004 and same-sex marriage licenses were issued from San Francisco City Hall.
During their tenure with ADF, Mr. Tyler and Ms. Bursch successfully obtained an injunction from the California Supreme Court against the City and County of San Francisco, which ultimately led to a permanent injunction and an order declaring that the same-sex marriage licenses were void.
When Prop 8 was challenged in the courts after it passed in 2008, Advocates for Faith & Freedom was asked to intervene on behalf of the County of Imperial, California, in cooperation with the official campaign proponents, to defend Prop 8. After being denied intervention by the District Court, Robert Tyler argued and appeared before the Ninth Circuit on behalf of Imperial County Clerk, Chuck Storey, in defense of Proposition 8.
