DENVER, Jan. 10, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- Leading international motion picture actor Liam Neeson (Schindler's List, Taken) pushed himself to his physical, emotional and spiritual limits in THE GREY, Joe Carnahan's much anticipated survival drama set in the icy Alaskan wilderness. "In certain scenes you go into some really dark places," he said. "It's all about survival, about keeping your body and soul together, because if the elements don't get you then the wolves most definitely will."
THE GREY is a shocking film in many respects, not least in the forthright manner in which it deals with transcendent themes about death and the afterlife. It is by no means a film for everyone. "If you're afraid of wild animals or plane travel, this movie will put you off for a good, long time," laughs director Carnahan (Smoking' Aces, The A Team). Beyond that, the rough language used by the riffraff, ex-cons and journeymen jobber characters in the film is not for the faint of heart. But the film concerns real people facing death and as such provides a fascinating snapshot into where we are as a culture on the questions of heaven, hell, God and the devil.
"We're all being stalked by time," Carnahan continued. "The 'survival story' became infused with far more existential questions as the rewriting proceeded. I wanted something that had deeper meaning, something that questioned nature and life and God. The wolves are part of that."
Actor Frank Grillo (Warrior, Edge of Darkness), whose character undergoes a striking conversion in the film when faced with his own demise, was deeply moved by the experience of making the film. "I grew up with a heavy influence of Christ in my life but got away from it. It wasn't that I didn't believe in God, it's just that I didn't think He believed in me. I went through some beautiful moments in making this film. To prepare for my final scene, Joe and I talked about our lives and what we believed in, and we wept. It was a monumental thing to do this movie. It got me thinking about my faith again."
