PHOENIX, Az., May 1, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- As the Supreme Court tries to determine whether or not same-sex marriage will be accepted by the governing laws of the U.S. The gay rights community has received support from the first gay professional athlete that has come out publicly. Many are calling Jason Collins a role model to all Americans and view his openness as "courageous." Many of the youth today look up to professional athletes as role models, so the question has to be asked; should Jason Collins be considered a role model or not?
A role model is someone who leads others in the right direction in life. They set the example for how other should conduct themselves in times of celebration or anxiety. While Collins "coming out" was heroic in the sense that he was the first athlete to do it in one of the four major professional sports. The responsibility of a role model is still to lead people in the right direction regardless of how enthusiastic or sincere they may be. Our youth should not look at the actions of Collins as an example, because his actions lead people away from the truth of God's Word. Our country already has a lack of growing male presence in the lives of the youth; and overall we as a society have begun to question our original purpose because we do not see it as much as we use too. When we as individuals and as a nation step out of God's purpose for us, we set ourselves up for failure. Our country has always embraced change and that is what separates us from many other nations. But, when that change undermines the very foundation this country was established on, which was the Bible. We have to ask ourselves, are we making the right decision?
