The Good Friday Service will be held under a 15ft cross which will be displayed at the Capitol Building.
This public Good Friday Service is also a powerful witness to the importance of protecting religious freedom and civil liberties during the COVID-19 crisis and ensuring expressions of faith are always considered "essential."
Rev. Patrick Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition and organizer of the service, states;
"While our nation shudders under the weight of this global pandemic, the power and message of the cross provides inspiration and strength to face the difficult challenges ahead.
"Dietrich Bonhoeffer so beautifully stated from a prison cell as he faced execution, 'Good Friday and Easter free us to think about other things far beyond our own personal fate, about the ultimate meaning of all life, suffering, and events; and we lay hold of a great hope.'
"Good Friday reminds us of God's extraordinary love and mercy for all of humanity as Christ experienced untold suffering to bring us into a personal relationship with God. In a highly partisan and divided city and nation, the cross of Christ towers over America as a bright beacon that all are welcome. All have worth. All have value.
"During this national health crisis, it is critical that religious freedom and civil liberties are protected and not crushed. Faith communities believe it is possible during the coronavirus emergency to protect both the health of our citizens and also their religious freedoms and rights. Protecting these two foundational principles is not mutually exclusive.
"Finally, participants will practice social distancing, limit the size of attendees to Washington, D.C. guidelines and ensure that while we are honoring God, we are loving our neighbor as well."
