Christian Newswire/ -- Less than a decade after Pope John Paul II's death in 2005, he will be declared a saint by the Catholic Church on April 27th, along with Pope John XXIII. It will be the first time two popes will be made saints on the same day. Pope John Paul II was often a newsmaker during his pontificate; he was the most traveled pope; he sparked the fall of Communism, and gave us his Theology of the Body. This theology, taken from Pope Paul VI's 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae, taught on both the beauty of marital love and warnings for abusing it. Pope John Paul II served during the aftermath of a world suffering the consequences of ignoring Pope Paul's warnings against contraception, including the widespread breakup of families and abortion.
According to Emily Stimpson, author of
These Beautiful Bones: An Everyday Theology of the Body published by Emmaus Road Publishing, John Paul's Theology of the Body, is especially relevant today and goes far beyond the bedroom. "It has a lot to say about the beauty of our everyday lives, lived in a body, moment by moment with extraordinary opportunities for grace," she says. "Sexual intimacy between spouses is a big part of it, but not the only part."
Drawing on Catholic theology and philosophy, and written with both wit and beauty, These Beautiful Bones examines how to live out the Theology of the Body. Stimpson shows readers how to glorify God through their bodies in everything from daily household chores to the clothes they wear to the meals they eat.
Many of society's problems stem from removing God from the center of our lives with the result of confusion of what real love is. "If we don't know our own dignity -- our own value -- how can we see beauty and meaning in the lives of our children?" Stimpson asks.
The encouraging news is that the truth of the Theology of the Body has changed lives. It does not teach anything new, but is an approach from the Church to affect our sex-crazed world and help us understand the sacramental view of life and relationships. It is an antidote to the ills of our culture.
Emily Stimpson is available for interviews to discuss the upcoming Canonization of Pope John Paul II and his teachings on the Theology of the Body. Contact
