FRONT ROYAL, Virginia, Sept. 7 /Christian Newswire/ -- Steven Mosher, President of the Population Research Institute, today congratulated the U.S. Senate for upholding the Kemp-Kasten Amendment.
"We are delighted that the Kemp-Kasten Amendment was adopted into the Foreign Operations Appropriations bill," Mosher said. "PRI's research has proven that the U.N. Population Fund is joined at the hip to China's policy of forced abortion and sterilization, and this vote helps to ensure that no U.S. funds will flow to that renegade organization, or to China itself." The pro-life amendment was sponsored by Senator Sam Brownback (R-KA), and passed on a 48-45 vote.
"The vote against the Mexico City policy, on the other hand, is a major disappointment," Mosher continued. "The Mexico City policy has been in place almost a quarter century, and represents a broad consensus among Americans not to fund abortion-minded groups. Barbara Boxer's (D-CA) Amendment, which passed on a 53-41 vote, guarantees that cash will flow freely to foreign organizations that promote and/or perform abortion as a method of family planning.
The Mexico City Policy Amendment would have prohibited U.S. funding to private overseas organizations that perform, or actively promote, abortion as a method of family planning. The Kemp-Kasten Amendment prohibits U.S. funding from going to any organization that supports or participates in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization.
President Bush has promised to veto any bill which weakens current pro-life policy.
The Population Research Institute (PRI) was founded in 1989 by Fr. Paul Marx, OSB, PhD and is dedicated to: (1) ending human rights abuses committed in the name of “family planning”, (2) opposing outdated social and economic paradigms premised on the myth of overpopulation, (3) informing the public about the social and economic benefits of moderate population growth, and (4) promoting pro-natal and pro-family attitudes and policies worldwide. Steven Mosher is the author of numerous books, including A Mother’s Ordeal, available in 11 languages. His next book is due in the fall of 2007.
