CHARLESTON, S.C., May 27, 2021 /
Christian Newswire/ -- "Civility is within you. Pass it on." Rev. Susan Sparks recounts seeing this billboard outside Las Vegas in her new book, Love, a Tiara and a Cupcake. "This was such a simple reminder, but one that hit me like a jet breaking the sound barrier. We have civility in us. Find it, remember it and pass it on." Christian civility is the purpose of the fifth-tenth annual Say Something Nice Sunday on June 6, 2021.
Churches of all denominations will join in the celebration of the day to promote more Christ-like speech. The goal is to turn down the hostile rhetoric in an attempt to promote more productive communication. The movement started at First Baptist Church in Charleston, South Carolina and was quickly followed by the Charleston/Atlantic Presbytery. Disciples of Christ, Lutheran, and Methodists churches picked up the cause. In 2010 The Most Reverend Robert E. Guglielmone, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Charleston (representing all of South Carolina) endorses the celebration. "Our words should be used to express love not hatred. What better way can we express this belief than to celebrate a day devoted to healing with our words?"
Rev. Dr. Marshall Blalock, pastor of First Baptist Church and former president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention said, "Today we recover the idea that we need to choose our words carefully and turn them into a powerful force for good. Today we will discover how to routinely choose wise words that build others up rather than tear them down."
Why have a Say Something Nice Sunday? The simple answer is that words are powerful. Words have the power to build or destroy. Words have the power to wound or to heal. With our words we have the possibility to build a Christian community or to destroy it. This special day is an opportunity to build a community of faith, strengthen relationships and heal old wounds. This is a day to thank all those who make our lives better just by being a part of them. It is a day to thank those who have made our lives better in special ways.
