SAN DIEGO, Oct. 31, 2023 /Christian Newswire/ -- As the Catholic Church makes fresh headlines seemingly every day with scandal, infighting, and confusing statements from its leaders over matters of faith and morals, some apologists for Eastern Orthodoxy have spied an opportunity. Did you know, they ask in chat groups, on social media, at the workplace, that there is an apostolic, sacramental, liturgical church that’s a lot like your own, only without your Catholic baggage? And then they press their challenges to Catholicism, hoping to win sheep away from Rome.
Michael Lofton (Reason & Theology) used to be one of those sheep. But now he has returned to the Catholic Church, and he has written a new book to help other Catholics respond to those challenges from the East: Answering Orthodoxy, from Catholic Answers Press.
Unlike modern Protestant groups, Orthodoxy is rooted in apostolic tradition, offers seven valid sacraments, and worships God in a sacrificial liturgy of ancient form--just like Catholicism. But it diverges from full Catholic teaching in many ways, and each of these ways represents an attack on Catholic claims to being the one, true Church founded by Christ. In Answering Orthodoxy, Lofton examines thirty Orthodox attacks--on Catholic doctrine, history, and worship--and shows Catholics how to refute them clearly and with charity.
“With many Catholics today feeling a pull toward Orthodoxy as a possible alternative to their native faith, the timing for this much-needed work couldn’t be better,” says Todd Aglialoro, director of publishing for Catholic Answers Press. “We love our Orthodox brothers and sisters, but we also need to be able to answer their charges and be fully confident in the truth of our Catholic faith.”
About the Author: Michael Lofton is the founder and host of the Reason & Theology ministry and podcast.
