ENUMCLAW, Wash., Nov. 21 /Christian Newswire/ -- Harried and sleep-deprived from caring for their infant son and their two-year-old with special needs, Carolyn M. Brown and her husband knew their four-year-old, Katie, missed their attention. But they didn't know what to do about it.
Then a new neighbor stepped into their lives, and Brown and her family discovered the power of one who was willing to serve others with small, seemingly insignificant acts of kindness. Brown wrote her new children's book, "All You Want and Then Some" (WinePress Publishing, 2008), to share her family's story.
In the book, God sends Bella, a special neighbor who becomes an extraordinary friend to Katie and her family. Basking in Bella's love and service, Katie soon wants to serve others too. She discovers that God has blessed her beyond her expectations--with new friends, a good feeling in her heart, and squishy marshmallows that float--"all you want and then some."
"Our Lord faithfully provides for our needs," says Brown, "and because he is a loving and generous God, he is eager to satisfy some of our wants as well."
Brown took the title from a favorite saying of her father. "My dad frequently used the phrase 'All you want and then some' to refer to the volume of food at the dinner table or anything he kept in great quantity," she says. "I wanted to remember him in my first publication, and this phrase made the connection I was looking for between Bella and Christ."
As Bella's relationship with her family grew, Brown says, "the humble attitude of this lady became so apparent that even our daughter, who was only 4, said one day, 'Jesus must be a lot like Bella.'"
"When we observe small acts of service to others," she adds, "we all realize that hey, even I can do that! These seemingly insignificant acts sometimes have a huge impact."
A former teacher, Brown now homeschools her children and teaches Sunday school. She and her family sponsor a child from Mozambique through World Vision, support Heiffer International, and the Hearts For Honduras School in La Entrada. Brown lives with her family in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.
