Effort Underway to Increase African American Participation in Mission Work Above Current 1%
Conference to Mobilize All Races in Global Missions
DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md., March 14, 2016 /
Christian Newswire/ -- Hundreds of missionaries, global mission leaders and mission agencies are coming together for the fourth annual National African American Missions Conference (NAAMC). The conference is being held June 23-25, 2016 at McLean Bible Church Conference Center in McLean, Virginia.
In 2014, The National African American Missions Conference (NAAMC) emerged from the partnership of Great Commission Global Ministries (GCGM) and SIM USA.
The conference is a non-denominational collaboration of faith partners, that seeks to mobilize, enlist, and educate all races of mission leaders, outreach pastors, short and long term mission coordinators, and lay persons who desire to see all underrepresented people engage in the Great Commission.
According to the 2007 African American Missions Mobilization Manifesto by Columbia International University, Blacks make up less than one percent of the total number (118,600) of U.S. missionaries. "The mission of the NAAMC is to help ignite the flames of a modern mission movement in the African American Community and beyond, "said Bishop David Perrin, Founder and President of the NAAMC.
The conference provides participants the opportunity to strengthen their mission skills in a safe forum, to network and embrace diverse mission teachings and experiences. According to Bruce Johnson, President of SIM USA, a global mission partner, with the NAAMC, "God calls the whole Church to be His ambassadors to the nations. Johnson goes on to say, "Let's face it, missions from the U.S. has been too white for too long. SIM USA is passionate to see the whole church go to the whole world. Jesus said our love and unity will leave a mark! The NAAMC serves to help inspire, connect and equip us."
As in past years, the conference will offer numerous workshops and plenary sessions that will feature some of most recognized leaders in the mission field. "Actually, the NAAMC is three conferences in one. There is an adult division, youth division and a children's division. This threefold approach is an important part of our strategy to preserve and strengthen the witness of the church. The future will not plan for us, we must plan for the future," says Perrin.
The NAAMC Missionary Scholarship Award provides financial support to a deserving recipient, and will be used to fund their cross cultural mission assignment. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements and attend the conference.
