Christian Newswire/ -- In a book to be released in early February, former Fortune 100 corporate executive Fred Sievert reveals the work stress he faced in his rapid career ascension and offers up some interesting career advice for today's professionals: Partner with God.
"Invite God through prayer as I have done daily during my thirty-five years in business," writes Sievert, the former president of New York Life Insurance Company, in his book, God Revealed: Revisit Your Past to Enrich Your Future. "You are likely to discover, as I did, that you have a very powerful business partner."
Sievert also reveals the high level of stress he experienced at work. The stress, Sievert details, took a physical toll. "My typically healthy, smiling face reflected sadness and sleep deprivation … As much as I longed for sleep, it would not come," Sievert writes. Much of the relief, he says, came when he learned to reflect daily on the Bible and prayed for God's guidance.
According to The Sunday Times (UK), a study released earlier this month appears to confirm Sievert's prescription for work stress: The study found that actively religious employees are more likely to report low levels of anxiety, depression and fatigue and more likely to feel that their lives have meaning.
In interviews promoting his book, Sievert has also said the stories that make up God Revealed can be seen as a challenge to atheists: "Since atheism is itself a belief system requiring faith that God does not exist, I encourage atheists to ask themselves the question: is the evidence of God in my life greater or lesser" than the evidence in their lives that God does not exist?
Raised in a lower-middle-class family, Sievert rapidly climbed the career ladder to become president of New York Life, a Fortune 100 corporation. Under his reign, New York Life dominated the industry, achieving the number one market share position in life insurance in the United States, among several other number-one rankings.
Even so, Sievert writes that market performance was not his greatest legacy as president of New York Life: "My greatest legacy to the company was more about my faith and my family values … than any of those corporate achievements."
