OMAHA, Neb., Sept. 19, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- Thomas More Society president and chief counsel Thomas Brejcha will travel to Omaha this Friday to join with Omaha lawyers to announce the opening in Omaha, Nebraska of a new chapter, affiliated with the Society's main office, based in Chicago. The joint announcement will be made at a fundraising banquet in Omaha hosted by the Knights of Columbus of St. Charles Borromeo Council, for the benefit of the Thomas More Society. The Omaha chapter will be staffed initially by six well-known and respected Omaha area attorneys.
According to Brejcha, the new Omaha chapter will function as a resource of legal expertise in support of the Society's main office located in Chicago. "We need to encourage Catholic lawyers across the entire nation to get more directly involved in defending our religious faith by using their God-given talents in court," said Brejcha. "There is no shortage of cases that come to the Thomas More Society from all over the U.S., but more especially in our nation's heartland. Thus we are excited to welcome this new host of volunteer attorneys joining our team -- lawyers who have remarkable expertise as well as years of professional experience adding significant new capabilities in support of our efforts to defend life, marriage, and religious liberty."
Leading the Omaha chapter as founding members of the new office are Martin Cannon, Richard Gilloon, Matthew F. Heffron, John H. Kellogg, Edward A. Morse, and Dennis Moynihan. Cannon and Heffron, former Assistant U.S. Attorneys, won nationwide applause when several years ago they defended the late valiant pro-life priest, Fr. Norman Weslin, in a criminal "FACE" trial in Omaha (after Father had entered the late-term abortion clinic of notorious Dr. Carhart, and knelt down to pray the rosary inside the clinic) -- a jury trial that ended in a verdict of acquittal! Edward Morse is a tenured law professor who holds an endowed chair at Creighton University Law School, and Messrs. Gilloon, Kellogg, and Moynihan also bear distinguished credentials. Also instrumental in launching the new affiliate is Frederick Abbound Jr., Andrew M. Bath, and Christine Delgado.
Brejcha also said efforts to open other affiliated offices are underway in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Detroit, Des Moines, and elsewhere. "This is a time of crisis for our Church and our movement, when pro-life lawyers must stand up and be counted," he concluded.
