PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 10, 2014 /Christian Newswire/ --The hidden epidemic of abuse continues to sweep across this nation and is grossly underreported (rape and sexual assault are the most underreported crimes ). Ray Rice was let go by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL after a video was released that appears to show the running back striking his then-fiancée in February. Increased awareness and support surrounding this issue is needed given the frequency of incidents and the resulting grim consequences. Abuse victims, every day, suffer in silence.
For more than 10 years, pastoral counselor and author Kimberly Davidson has helped women recover from the pain of abuse. Davidson herself found restoration and brings a clear message of hope and recovery in her latest book 'Dancing in the Sonshine.' "Abuse knows no boundaries. Millions of little girls are violated every day, and millions of women walk blindly into abusive relationships and traps. They hide deep traumatic wounds and need courage to heal," said Davidson.
After receiving her master's degree in specialized women's ministry and her board certification in biblical counseling, Davidson knows how to speak to her audience. "Abuse in any form causes a crisis in a person's life. It makes the person feel overwhelmed, powerless, and out of control. All the familiar ways of managing and dealing with the world don't work any longer," said Davidson. "While physical abuse might be the most visible, other types of abuse, such as emotional abuse, neglect, rape, and other forms of unwanted sexual contact, have an enormous traumatic effect and tend to leave deeper, more lasting scars. Anyone who suffers from abuse needs unconditional love and acceptance, and the power of truth. Self-help is not enough. With 'God-help' there are no limits to recovery. People can and do change," she added.
Davidson's book is a spiritual and psychological guide to help women break free from the wounds of abuse through the use of Scripture, contemporary research on trauma and the brain, ministerial experience, and interviews with survivors. Readers will learn:
- How to take back control, restore trust, and reclaim their lives.
- To come terms with their past and move powerfully into the future.
- The best ways to build up their self-image and self-worth.
- To love like they've never been hurt.
- The best way to thrive in relationships.
