TUSCALOOSA, Ala., Sept. 10, 2020 /Christian Newswire/ -- The medical license for Dr. Leah Torres, the abortionist recently named Medical Director at West Alabama Women's Center (WAWC) in Tuscaloosa, has been immediately suspended by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners (BME), citing fraudulent information provided by Torres and unprofessional conduct.

WAWC already made national news twice this year, once for the unexpected sale of the clinic to Amanda Reyes, President of the abortion group Yellowhammer Fund, and once for the death of a woman who left the clinic on May 7th and died shortly after -- the same week Reyes took over.

In the wake of these events, national and local organizations quickly launched a campaign calling for an investigation into the woman's death, probing into proper licensing of a new owner, and presenting deep concerns over the hiring of Torres.

The most recent complaint filed by this coalition (CEC For Life, Life Legal Defense Foundation, Operation Rescue, Pro-Life Tuscaloosa and Alabama Physicians for Life) was to the BME regarding Torres.

Torres was fired from a previous medical position in Utah after citizens expressed alarm regarding a social media post in which Torres implied that she cut the vocal cords of fetuses during abortions.  She later deleted the post and claimed she was referring to the umbilical cord.

The Order from the BME specifically mentions "public statements related to the practice of medicine which violate the high standards of honesty, diligence, prudence, and ethical integrity demanded from physicians licensed to practice in Alabama...."

The coalition was thankful to see their concerns specifically referenced in the Order. Though several complaints and letters have been submitted to state agencies, the BME has been the first to take any real action against this dangerous clinic.

Fr. Terry Gensemer, Director of CEC For Life, states,

"The abortion industry feels they are not accountable to anyone and you can see it in the way they operate. They are used to getting away with things like injuring women or hiring doctors who lie on their medical applications. However, in Alabama, citizens are making certain the state holds these places accountable. Abortion is not welcome here, and we are exposing these clinics: prayerfully, peacefully and legally."

He adds, "And while we are very thankful for the actions of the Board, we remain incredibly disappointed that the Department of Public Health once again did nothing to help prevent this. Torres is just one more instance where ADPH neglected their responsibility to make certain a clinic they are licensing is adhering to state regulations. Citizens are continually endangered because ADPH refuses to regulate these clinics in any meaningful way."
