OCP Chooses Revised Bilingual Setting by Bob Hurd for Worship Resources

Contact: Zach Laney, OCP, 503-460-5311

PORTLAND, Ore., May 11 /Christian Newswire/ -- In anticipation of the new translation of the Roman Missal, OCP has chosen five new and four revised Mass settings for initial publication. A revised bilingual setting, Misa del Pueblo Inmigrante/Mass of the Immigrants by Bob Hurd, is among those selected. While Masses in Spanish only are not affected by the new translation of the Roman Missal, bilingual settings must be prepared for communities worshiping in both languages.

"Misa del Pueblo Inmigrante/Mass of the Immigrants was inspired by dance rhythms and music I heard while my wife and I were in Oaxaca, Mexico for the annual Guelaguetza celebration," said Hurd. "Guelaguetza means gift-sharing, with the idea that each person or diverse group contributes their talent for the common good. Similarly, this Mass setting invites diverse language communities to join together in the celebration and the work of the Eucharist."

This parish-tested setting will be included in an Order of Mass supplement, which will be made available to OCP customers using resources affected by the new translation.

"I have learned several things about composing from leading song at worship," said Hurd. "These lessons guided my composition of this Mass as well as its recent revision. One is that assembly participation requires memorable melodies that can engage people easily. Another is that the music should be led by the Word and really support the communication of the Word. Liturgical song places the Word of God--whether it comes from the readings or the ritual texts--on our lips and in our hearts so that we can respond with our own word of faith and love."
