SAN FRANCISCO, April 21, 2020 /
Christian Newswire/ -- Eight popes faced both spiritual and physical challenges that affected not only their Catholic flock, but the entire world during the 20th century. The assault on the dignity and the rights of the human person were ongoing and brutal. In a new book, EIGHT POPES AND THE CRISIS OF MODERNITY, by Russell Shaw and published by Ignatius Press, all eight Roman pontiffs during the last century are shown how they fought back against the attacks on human dignity.
Shaw also focuses on their greatest reforms in the Catholic Church and the hurdles they faced from within to make those changes.
Shaw is a widely published author and journalist who has written more than twenty books, including American Church and Nothing to Hide: Secrecy, Communication, and Communion in the Catholic Church. For 18 years, Shaw directed media relations for the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and the United States Catholic Conference. From 1987 to 1997 he oversaw media relations for the Knights of Columbus.
EIGHT POPES AND THE CRISIS OF MODERNITY offers a distinctive, illuminating interpretation of recent world events viewed through the lens of an ancient institution, the papacy, a key champion of human rights under attack in modern times. The book tells these stories through short profiles of the eight popes that combine crucial, and often little-known, facts about the men who led the Catholic Church in the 20th century.
Shaw draws on his extensive experience in Church affairs to offer a unique perspective as someone who has seen the inside workings of the Vatican and understands which events were crucial to the papacies of the last century.
"Russell Shaw has been a leading voice on the American Catholic scene for decades, and his latest book — a vivid, engaging portrait of eight modern popes and their defense of human dignity — is a powerful reminder of the importance of the papacy and its achievements during a turbulent century," said Most Rev. Charles Chaput, former archbishop of Philadelphia.
