ATLANTA, September 18 /Christian Newswire/ -- Al Green and Shirley Caesar will share the Gospel Music Channel stage in the very special Night of Legends Presented by Allstate event on Sunday, September 23.
Night of Legends Presented by Allstate begins at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) with the Gospel Music Channel premiere of The Gospel According to Al Green. The Sundance Film Festival-nominated documentary, directed by famed documentary filmmaker Robert Mugge, presents Rev. Green's inspired singing as well as the story of his life in his own words – first chronicling his conversion experience after a concert at Disneyland and then reliving his new life at the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Memphis, Tenn. The 90-minute documentary also features footage from one of his concerts in Washington D.C. and includes scenes of Al performing a musical sermon.
Green then cedes the spotlight to another gospel great Shirley Caesar for in the world premiere of Faith & Fame: Shirley Caesar at 9:30 p.m. (ET/PT). Caesar tells her story in her own words, taking viewers inside her world to see the family and inspirations that brought her to renowned fame and distinction as the queen of gospel music.
Caesar started singing at the age of 12 to help support her widowed mother in North Carolina. She spent eight years as a part of the Caravans (Albertina Walker, Bessie Griffin, Delores Washington, Inez Andrews, Cassietta George) before turning, in the 60s, to evangelism, preaching and singing in churches and venues around the country. In 1990, Caesar opened her own Pentecostal church. Most of Caesar's 40-plus albums are recorded live, capturing the power of gospel music at its best. Along with the numerous Grammy, Dove and Stellar awards she's received, Caesar has also performed on Broadway appearing in the productions Born to Sing: Mama 3, Mama I Want to Sing and Sing Mama 2. She was inducted into the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame 2000, but that milestone did not mean retirement for one of the most prolific artists in gospel music.
The special show is the latest episode in GMC's original series biography series Faith & Fame, which features gospel/Christian music artists sharing the stories of their lives, family, music and faith.
