MEDIA ADVISORY, April 29 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Athanatos Online Apologetics Academy begins its spring session on May 1, 2009. The academy aims to equip Christians and seekers with the facts of the faith and a deepened ability to engage American society. Two Greek courses offered this session will allow laypeople to take their study of the New Testament to new levels.
A flood of statistics this spring about the growing decline in Christianity in America has raised eyebrows but Anthony Horvath, the director of the academy, has been raising the alarm for years. His assertion in July of 2007 that the church was creating atheists received national attention. The apologetics academy is one of his ministry's answers to the situation.
The online apologetics academy offers courses that meet several objectives. Meeting modern challenges to the faith is one objective. Equipping Christians with the tools to understand their own faith better is another.
To that latter goal, the academy is offering two back to back courses in Biblical (koine) Greek. In 3-6 weeks even the ordinary, non-seminary trained Christian layperson will be able to access the original language behind English translations.
Horvath explains, "You've heard it said 'It's all Greek to me' but in fact Greek is not as difficult as one might think. Once the alphabet is learned one quickly discovers how much of our English language is derived from Greek words. After a little work, a person who takes our Greek courses will be able to look at the actual Greek of a passage from the New Testament and explore what they find there."
The Greek courses are 3 weeks each with the first beginning on May 1st and the second on May 25th. The first course lays the groundwork in the language and then exposes students to study tools that will aid them in their future research.
The second course delves into more vocabulary and grammar.
Horvath hastens to explain that the courses are not going to make Bible translators out of anybody. However, they can lay a great foundation for further language study and in the meantime open up new vistas in one's own devotional studies.
