ENUMCLAW, Wash., Jan. 3, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- The choice was easy: Go to jail or fly to a remote island -- complete with sandy beaches and shimmering lakes -- for a week. Miguel chose Promise Island.

Ruth Esther Vawter chronicles the adventures of Miguel and three other troubled teens who experience life-changing encounters with God on heart-shaped Promise Island. In her first novel, "Adventures on Promise Island," for tweens and teens, the retired elementary teacher introduces readers to:

  • Miguel -- A gang leader who arrives at the island in handcuffs, Miguel is consumed with hatred for his father and grandfather, who are both in prison. Miguel believes he, too, is sentenced to a life of crime.

  • Ya Ming -- An award-winning dancer, Ya Ming is confined to a wheelchair following a collision with a drunk driver that killed her brother. Angry at God for allowing this tragedy in her life, she must face her worst fears before deciding whether she's willing to experience God's healing.
     .
  • Tobi -- A rich bully who lives with an abusive father, Tobi knows he needs help, but must battle vicious attacks from his demons: hate and rebellion.

  • Keerstin -- An artist who excels at drawing but has never learned to read, Keerstin is challenged to complete a task that requires commitment and skills she thought she didn't possess.

During an action-packed week, each teen encounters God in unique and personal ways. As Miguel, Ya Ming, Tobi, and Keerstin learn to believe in the power of the Trinity, they gain a better understanding of a loving God who longs to be close to them.

Young readers, too, will find healing, purpose, and hope as they read "Adventures on Promise Island," says Vawter. "All of us need to ask God to show us how to achieve our purpose in life. If we accept the power available to us through the Holy Spirit, we will overcome every obstacle in our lives. Jesus is the source of everything we need."
