Wanda Bauer was nine years old the day her mother almost committed suicide by jumping off the Ohio Bridge.

After growing up in a home in which she witnessed domestic violence, alcoholism, and divorce -- and then becoming a teen parent and later divorcing her abusive husband -- Bauer decided to make a difference in the lives of young people in similar situations.

"I chose a profession that allows me to counsel with other people in hard circumstances, and it has given me opportunities to talk with teenagers and adults about alcoholism, divorce, and other problems that cause family dysfunction," she says.

Her new book, "Please Don't Jump," includes many anecdotes from her own childhood, as well as transcripts of counseling sessions with adolescents and young adults. Through real-life examples, Bauer shows readers how to avoid "jumping" into marriage and parenting until they are well-equipped to take on those lifelong commitments.

Children carry their past with them into adulthood, often unintentionally damaging their own spouses and children in the same ways in which they were damaged. "We can break the cycle of abuse, neglect, and violence," asserts Bauer. "We need to educate young people so they can learn how to turn things around."

Learning to forgive is a key aspect of moving forward successfully, believes Bauer. "When you grow older and you can look back and forgive a family member who wronged you, you know you have built much character," she says.

God equips each of us with a "roadmap" to guide our decision-making so we can avoid making the same mistakes as our parents did, Bauer says. "Young people need to understand that whatever situation they may be in, there is a way out and there is hope."
