Maryknoll Magazines Focus on Accompaniment, Empowerment During Life's Journey and Unique Mission Immersion Programs in Bolivia
MARYKNOLL, N.Y., Jan. 3, 2013 /
Christian Newswire/ -- "Friends On The Journey," with stories that reflect Maryknoll's work with, among others, the poor and marginalized around the world, is the theme for the January-February issues of "Maryknoll" magazine and the Spanish-language "Revista Maryknoll." Both magazines also feature the work of the Maryknoll Mission Center in Cochabamba, Bolivia.
Maryknoll's magazines are published by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, the foreign mission society of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Current and recently published issues of both Maryknoll magazines can be viewed online (

Maryknoll Brother John Beeching of Alberta, Canada, writes about his recent visit with Burmese refugees displaced by renewed fighting between people seeking independence and the Burmese army.
"It was Daw Suu's ('Aunty Suu,' referring to Myanmar opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi) emphasis on the importance of remembering those in need and the power of little acts of kindness to change lives that stayed with me on my journey," wrote Father Beeching.
Another article travels with Maryknoll's Father Peter Wu and Father Eugene Murray as they visit an old army village in Taiwan. The community was built for families of the Nationalist Chinese army of Chiang Kai-shek. Today, the village's past is fading as it is transformed and modernized.
Father Wu, who was born in Shanghai and educated in the U.S., is from the Diocese of Newark, New Jersey. Father Murray is from New York and the Diocese of Rockville Centre. During their visit, they met with the village's elderly residents. While some residents were soldiers during World War II, many others are the widows of the soldiers along with their caregivers from the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand.
Mission In Bolivia
The Maryknoll Society has developed and grown the Maryknoll Mission Center and the Maryknoll Language Institute in Bolivia for the past 40 years. Located in Cochabamba, the center brings mission and leadership formation programs to Latin Americans and it provides language training and mission immersion programs to people from around the world. The Cochabamba area is known for standard Spanish with clear pronunciation, and the Maryknoll Language Institute assists people with linguistic and cultural preparation for intercultural service.
Since 1965, more than 10,000 people, religious and laity preparing for mission, have studied Spanish and the Andean languages of Aymara and Quechua at Maryknoll. Graduates work in all parts of Latin American and in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
Articles published in Maryknoll's magazines showcase the Maryknoll center as a global hub for mission activity.
