SACRAMENTO, Dec. 3 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Save our Kids campaign has obtained a copy of a letter Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell sent out last week to school administrators regarding the SB 777 referendum. In a deceptive attempt to discredit the referendum campaign, O'Connell declares the effort a "misguided protest". The Superintendent then misleadingly writes that "SB 777 simplifies and clarifies" the law regarding discrimination in schools.
"By sending this deceitful letter, Jack O'Connell has officially become the Superintendent of Public Misinformation," stated Karen England, executive director of Capitol Resource Family Impact and director of the referendum campaign. "SB 777 most definitely expands the law and goes much further than simply implementing anti-discrimination policies in schools."
"The Superintendent is well aware that there are already adequate anti-discrimination policies in public school. He knows this because she sent a letter in April 2004 to every school in the state detailing these policies and his expectation that every school would comply," continued England. "Even the California Safe Schools Coalition, a group created to oversee the implementation of such policies, states that 94% of schools have an anti-discrimination policy regarding sexual orientation."
"Mr. O'Connell tells school administrators that it is his duty to implement the laws the legislatures passes and the governor approves," stated Meredith Turney, legislative liaison for Capitol Resource Family Impact. "Well, it is also his duty to tell the truth. This misleading letter proves that the elected officials who approved this law are worried that the truth is getting out. And they should be worried-the people are going to hold them accountable."
"SB 777 is a radical measure that seeks to indoctrinate innocent children, as young as 5, regarding homosexual and other controversial lifestyles," stated England. "This new law greatly expands the indoctrination in classroom instruction and school activities and the Superintendent knows it."
