HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 17, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- Media Expert and family and child advocate Dr. Ted Baehr, founder and chairman of the Christian Film & Television Commission (R), an advocacy group in Hollywood, speaks out about Rihanna's vulgar tweet: "Most times these female show performers are held in captivity against their will and are sold into slavery at such young ages they don't live past the age of 20, due to working conditions and highly-addictive drugs used to keep them enslaved."
According to The Guardian On September 20 Rihanna tweeted to some 32 million followers about a female performer from an illegal sex show she attended in Phuket, Thailand. "Embarrassed Thai officials" claimed they used the tweet to arrest the owner of the bar whom they had been wanting to apprehend, but previously did not have enough evidence.
Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times, and wife Sheryl Wudunn, have dedicated their life work to fighting sex trafficking, taking American actresses Eva Mendez, Meg Ryan, Diane Lane, Gabrielle Union, and America Ferrera overseas to film the PBS documentary "Half the Sky" (2012) exposing the oppression of women worldwide.
While these actresses and many other celebrities are advocates of protecting, empowering and educating women around the world, its discouraging that Rihanna is supporting the international sex trade.
Sadly, the only outrage over her adventures in Thailand is from animal activists around the world about the misuse of exotic animals. Previously, she posted a photo to Instagram and Twitter of herself posing with the slow loris - a protected primate, which led to arrests of two young men after authorities raided wildlife markets in that region.
"It's not a victimless crime." Dr. Baehr stated soberly, "and in this case, Rihanna is a perpetrator. Our hope is that she will realize the severity of this global issue and get involved in the fight to promote human dignity and freedom." Movieguide® has found from years of research and analysis in mass media that celebrities have a direct effect on the culture and behavior of American youth.
