The Connecticut-native Taylor was an active participant in the religious revivals that swept the eastern and southern U.S. in the early nineteenth-century. A graduate of The Lawrenceville School (NJ) and Princeton University, and a cousin of the famed missionary David Brainerd (1718-1747), Taylor died while a student at Yale Seminary. He is the primary founder of the Philadelphian Society of Nassau Hall (1825–1930), the spiritual parent to today's Princeton Evangelical Fellowship campus ministry. The Memoir of James Brainerd Taylor was the fifth most printed memoir in the mid-to-late nineteenth century by the largest Christian publisher in America at the time, the American Tract Society. Among other Europeans, the Scottish explorer-missionary to Africa, David Livingstone (1813–1873), read and was inspired by Taylor's memoir. Especially inspiring to Livingstone and others was Taylor's emphasis to himself and his converts to become "uncommon Christians."
