BUENA PARK, Calif., Nov. 16, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- On Veterans Day 2011, Stanford E. Linzey, Jr., posthumously received the Warriors Medal of Valor from the Native American Nations of the United States of America for Valorous Service to a Grateful Nation. The honor was received by Dr. Verna Linzey on behalf of her late husband during the Congressional Day of Prayer of Washington, D.C. The event was to honor American Veterans and their families on Veterans Day 2011 and to pray America back to one nation under God.

The national event was staged at Knott's Berry Farm's Independence Hall from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Veteran's Day in partnership with over 100,000 pastors from the United States Pastors Association and veterans groups all across our nation. This was the inaugural event for the first annual "National Day of Prayer for Veterans and their Families."  All church, political, and civic leaders in attendance were invited to give a greeting and a prayer for our veterans. The keynote speaker was Congressman Ed Royce, who spoke on the spirituality of veterans and the fact that they fought for our freedom.

Also receiving the Warriors Medal of Valor was Captain Linzey's son, Rev. Jim Linzey, who is a retired Army chaplain at the rank of Major. Retired Major Linzey was one of the speakers along with his mother, Dr. Verna Linzey. The prestigious event was broadcast live on Crusade Radio nationwide, hosted by the chairman of the event, Rev. Wiley S. Drake, former second vice-president of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Chaplain Stanford Linzey was a World War II survivor of the Battle of Midway when he was a radio operator aboard the USS Yorktown, which was bombed and torpedoed during the battle. He later became the first Active US Navy chaplain representing the Assemblies of God. Between father and son, the two served for a combined total of 45 years as military chaplains, spanning the Air Force, Army and Navy -- Stanford Linzey for 21 years in the Navy and Jim Linzey for nearly 24 years in the Air Force and Army. Stanford had previously served 7 years as an enlisted sailor.

The two had a close relationship as Jim had ministered alongside his father in several churches, as did Verna Linzey throughout their lives. Another striking commonality is that all three wrote books on the Holy Spirit, complimenting each other's ministries.
