CHICAGO, May 29, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Illinois General Assembly is being pressured to vote on a homosexual marriage bill by a vocal minority of gay advocacy groups. Arguments on either side of the issue have centered on perceived rights and religious beliefs, but little attention has been given to the impact on children, the primary victims who will be affected should same-sex marriage be declared legal in Illinois.
John Mauck, a partner in the Chicago-based firm of Mauck & Baker, voices serious concern about the implications for Illinois children should Illinois lawmakers enact a law sanctioning gay marriage. "There are multiple reasons why preservation of traditional marriage is in the best interests of the children of Illinois, especially children who are in foster care, adoption, or custody proceedings," stated Mauck. "New research demonstrates that children of parents who have same sex relationships are at greater risk of negative outcomes than those from intact biological families," he explained. "Incidence of sexual abuse, sexually transmitted disease, suicidal thinking, reliance on therapy, and even dependence on welfare, is alarmingly higher than for children who grew up with a mother and father."
A key player in defending traditional marriage as being between one man and one woman, Mauck is the submitting attorney of an amici curiae (friends of the court) brief filed on behalf of The Moody Church and fourteen other Illinois churches to protect marriage and families in the state of Illinois. Mauck has also been instrumental on the national scene, calling for preservation of the historic family unit with an amicus brief from the Manhattan Declaration to the United States Supreme Court, supporting the Defense of Marriage Act.
As a legal expert on the issue of same-sex marriage and a long time Director of an Illinois child services agency, Mauck cautioned that there are unintended negative consequences that will result from a state recognition of same-sex marriage. "Every day Illinois headlines focus on violence against children and the effect of school closures on children," Mauck pointed out and then warned, "Redefining marriage is not in the best interests of the children of Illinois."
