MIDLAND, Texas, Feb. 9 /Christian Newswire/ -- CAA learned that Beijing house church activist Hua Huiqi’s 76-year-old mother, Ms. Shuang Shuying was formally arrested by Beijing Public Security Bureau Chongwen Branch on February 9, 2007 with the approval of Chongwen District Prosecutor on the charge of willfully damaging public and private property.
Hua had been sentenced to one month of criminal detention on the charge of intervening in a public affair last January 26. He and his mother were beaten by police from Chaoyang Police Branch, the police even poured cold water over him in 20 degree weather. His parents had been watched over by the police after that. During this time, the police from Sports Stadium Police Station threatened to arrest Hua’s older brother, and slashed the tie of his car.
Hua is an active house church Christian in Beijing. He has been passionately serving the ministry and assisting lots of persecuted Christians and oppressed peasants.
“We believe that the arrest of his mother is to stop his family’s appealing. We also believe that it’s an instruction directly from higher level of government. We are deeply concerned about Hua and his mother’s situation.”said Bob Fu who is the former coworker of Hua, “We ask for Christians, especially Christians in Beijing to visit and pray for Hua’s family. We urge the Chinese government to treat this case according to the rule of law, release Hua Huiqi and his aged and ill mother!”

CAA also learned that an article harshly criticizing President Bush by a senior Chinese government official was repudiated and censored from Chinese media. On February 2, Mr. Ye Xiaowen, the Director of State Administration of Religious Affairs (SARA) published an article in the front page of the overseas edition of People’s Daily accusing President Bush of instigating religious war in the name of anti-terrorism. (read the whole article by Ye by clicking here.)
It’s extremely rare for a ministerial level government official to rebuke the head of a foreign state by name. The New York Times published a report about Ye’s article and questioned whether it represented an official standing. According to a Chinese government source, along with all other reports on February 1, Mr. Ye’s article was completely removed from all of the official websites in China.
